Foot Pain Relief Through Proper Walking Techniques

During the holidays we are on our feet often more than any other time of the year. We are either shopping, standing in lines, cooking, spending lots of time in malls and whatnot. Whatever the reason you might be on your feet, it’s most likely your feet are achy. What can you do to relieve aching feet besides soaking them in Epsom salts?

Fortunately, Dahn Yoga can offer you some foot pain relief through a technique that provides 'proper walking'. The technique explained below is called Jangsaeng walking. Because Dahn Yoga is based on Korean or Asian medicine, the name may sound odd, but the results are great.

Here's how to do it.

1. Choose the right shoes for spending lots of time walking in. While something more comfortable isn’t as stylish, it is the first step in making your feet happy.

2. When we become tired or even as we grow older, we tend to walk on our heels or the outer edges of our feet. This causes tension to carry up to our back, shoulders and neck. This wears your body out quickly. To relieve this, we want to find the acupressure point in our foot called the Yong Chun. Once you have identify this spot in the middle of the foot, dead center, go to Step 3.

3. When walking, try to press this point on the ground firmly as you walk. When you do this, your body will naturally lean forward slightly and your feet will become more parallel.

4. Try not to slouch when you walk as your weight is shifted forward. Keep your back straight and yet relaxed.

5. Muscle tension is moved from neck and shoulders to the abdomen.
